United Democratic Alliance (UDA)
presidential running mate, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua, is former President
Daniel arap Moi’s biological son, thingira.org
can authoritatively report.
Gachagua, who was born in 1965
in Ruguru village, Mathira Constituency, Nyeri
County, being the eighth born child to Nashashon Gachagua Reriani and
Martha Kirigo, reports say his mother, Martha Kirigo used to be Moi’s
grassroots mobiliser and the two had a relation that resulted in his birth.
A photo taken around 1968 where
Moi is with his all children has Gachugua at the far left.
This means that UDA has presented
two Kalenjins for the top seat – Deputy President William Ruto (Kipsigis) and
Gachagua (Tugen).
Interestingly, for Ruto his biological
father is not Mzee Daniel Cheruiyot, who died recently, but a Kipsigis man who
was a chief.
Reports say Ruto’s mother, Mama
Serah Cheruiyot had a relation with the Kipsigis chief resulting in the birth
of the Deputy President.
That aside, Gachagua was
brought up by Nashashon Gachagua Reriani and Martha who were Mau
Mau freedom fighters in Mt Kenya forest.
Reriani was building and
servicing guns for the freedom fighters.
Gachagua enrolled at Kabiruini
Primary School from 1971 to 1977 before proceeding to Kianyaga High School for his O-levels and
A-levels.
In 1985, he joined the University of Nairobi where he graduated
with a Bachelor of Arts Degree; Political Science and Literature in 1988.
At the University, Gachagua was
known to speak directly to Moi, his father, who even bought him a car as a
gift.
Moi also directed then
spymaster, James Kanyotu, to be funding Gachagua to spy on other students.
According to former ODM
Political Affairs Director and one-time SONU leader, Wafula Buke, Gachagua has been a
member of the deep state since his campus days.
Buke says Comrades (UoN students)
feared Gachagua so much that while conversing and he approached them, the students
lowered their voices for fear of being arrested by security agents and charged
with subversion.
"He was the only confessed student I knew
who talked to Moi directly and bragged about
it," added Buke.
After graduation, from 1990 to
1999, Gachagua worked in various capacities in the ruling party, KANU administration,
including serving as personal assistant to the Head of Public Service, Prof. Phillip
Mbithi and as District Officer in
different parts of the country.
During the clamour for the
second liberation, the Gachaguas (Rigathi and his late brother Nderitu) aligned
themselves to the KANU regime with Rigathi joining the infamous YK92 group.
Ruto was the secretary general of YK92
Gachagua served as a District Officer in
Kakamega, Ng'arua and Laikipia Districts.
Between 1999 and 2000, he
joined Kenya School of Government where he graduated with a Diploma in Advanced
Public Administration.
On the 15th of May 2022, he was
nominated as the presidential election's running mate for under Kenya
Kwanza political coalition.
Ruto picked him though Tharaka
Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki was the favourite.
