Fresh details are emerging that the Chief of Staff at the Office of Deputy President William Ruto, Ken Osinde (pictured above), was poisoned using hydrogen cyanide chemical on Wednesday 7th December, 2021 while in an office in Karen.
The poisoning saw him put on Oxygen support until December 10th when he passed on to the relief of his tormentors.
The hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a colourless, rapidly acting and highly poisonous gas or liquid that has an odor of bitter almonds.
This was the chemical used by deposed Iraq President Saddam Hussein (deceased) during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s.
Once the poison enters the body in form of gas or liquid, it causes dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, restlessness and weakness, and this explains why Osinde was put on Oxygen support.
There are reports the poison was put on his food before he was served at Karen.
Osinde was appointed the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Deputy President on 25th October 2016.
In February 2019, one of his companies was implicated in the Arror and Kimwarer dam scandal for having irregularly received Sh47 million which was part of Sh21 billion bribe channeled to Ruto.
Osinde was then put on the DCI George Kinoti’s radar after his company was named as having played a role in the multi-billion tenders for construction of Kimwarer and Arror dams in Elgeyo Marakwet.
He was listed as a director of Sanlam Company, which as part of the 107 firms whose directors were summoned to record statements with the police.
Sanlam Company received Sh47 million from Italian firm CMC di Ravenna – which pocketed billions of taxpayers’ cash for work not done.
During the probe, Osinde explained why his firm was paid the said cash for the contract awarded by the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA).
Osinde was among influential politicians and directors of top firms summoned by anti-graft detectives for questioning over the stalled Sh63 billions dam projects.
Three Cabinet Secretaries including Treasury’s Henry Rotich recorded statements over the issue.
Rotich was later charged with conspiracy to defraud the government more than Sh63 billion in the Arror and Kimwarer dams scandal.
Workers at Harambee Annex revealed that in May 2019, Osinde recorded a statement with the DCI and even volunteered to be a State witness in the dams’ scandal.
They added that Kinoti even offered him State protection after he agreed to testify to help unravel the scandal.
In his statement to police, Osinde, sources added, implicated Ruto, Elgeyo/Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet and controversial businesswoman Mary Wambui Mungai, among others as being the key beneficiaries of the scandal.
But when Ruto got wind that Osinde had revealed the money train in the scandal, he got scared and started preparing how to eliminate him to kill the evidence.
Workers at Harambee Annex revealed that since 2019 Osinde had been receiving threats, including a shooting scare in the evening of 22nd January 2020.
They added that Osinde did not have a history of ailments as claimed by sections of the media.
The workers claimed Osinde was also murdered in an effort to conceal crucial information regarding the killing of Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei.
The first to reveal Osinde was killed by Ruto hired assassins was Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.
Dr Matiang’i by virtue of his office receives intelligence briefs daily and hence his words are truthful.
While expressing shock over the demise of Osinde, the CS noted that the deceased was his close friend and a contemporary in academia and public service.
Dr Matiang’i made it clear that for the duration he has known Osinde the deceased had never exhibited sickness or ill health.
He revealed that Osinde’s life was a portrait of robust health and hence was shocked by the sudden death.
His mysterious death came a few months after Ruto brutally murdered Sgt Kenei and blamed the Deep State after executing his mission.
Osinde, who was the Chief of Staff in the office of the Deputy President, was the only staff member who was akin to the happenings when former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa brought in the Polish arm dealers who would later be conned to the tune of billions.
Osinde was the person in charge of the CCTV footage that Ruto had declined to submit to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCL).
However, after the footage was submitted, Osinde was the first one to note that some crucial parts of the footage were missing.
Sources at Harambee Annex revealed that Osinde, a Kisii, was viewed with suspicion as he held so much secrets such that Deputy President would be advised to bar him from representing him during the just concluded Annual Governors Conference.
Osinde is believed to have sensitive information about Sergeant Kenei's murder and he was at the verge of releasing the information to the police when Ruto got to know and hence ordered his elimination.
Before he was murdered, Osidne was contemplating handing over his resignation letter.
According to co-workers, Osinde seemed disturbed and kept to himself.
His coworkers revealed that Osinde would have been a vital lead in unmasking the murder of Sergeant Kenei and that is why he was murdered to ensure the information did not leak.
“Ken was stressed in the past few months but we did not understand what the problem was,” said one of his colleagues.
Osinde started working at Harambee Annex in 2016 as the Chief of Staff where he acted as a mediator of issues before they reached the DP.
He had been a long-serving lecturer at the University of Nairobi where he pioneered research and published on Sheng’ and youth languages.
He also worked as a manager at the National Bank of Kenya where he rose to the position of Head of Strategic Planning.
