The trial in the case The Prosecutor versus Paul Gicheru (pictured) is scheduled to open on
15 February 2022 at 9:30 (The Hague local time) before Trial Chamber III,
composed of Judge Miatta Maria Samba.
Mr Gicheru is accused of
offences against the administration of justice consisting in corruptly
influencing witnesses regarding cases from the situation in Kenya.
The hearings for the opening statements of the Prosecution are
scheduled on 15 February 2022.
The Defence has decided
not to present any statements at this point of the proceedings.
Mr Gicheru is expected to attend the opening of his
trial.
The first prosecution witness will also be heard on the same
day.
Due to the current situation linked to Covid-19, some of the
hearings participants will take part via video-link.
Background: On 2 November 2020,
Paul Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of The Netherlands pursuant to an
ICC arrest warrant issued under seal on 10 March 2015
and unsealed on 10 September 2015. On 3
November 2020, Paul Gicheru was surrendered to the ICC custody after the
completion of the necessary national proceedings. His first appearance
before the Court took place on 6 November 2020. On 1
February 2021, he was released to Kenya with specific conditions restricting
liberty. On 15 July 2021, ICC Pre-Trial Chamber A confirmed the charges of
offences against the administration of justice brought by the Prosecutor
against Paul Gicheru and committed him to trial.

The hearing can be followed with 30-minute delay on the ICC
website in English and French, in English on the ICC
YouTube Channel, and in English and French on the ICC Facebook
accounts.
Attending the hearing:
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to the Court's
premises is restricted to protect the safety and well-being of users. A limited
number of public and media representatives will be granted access to the
hearing at the seat of the Court, following measures against coronavirus including
wearing a mask and keeping a distance of 1.5 metres.
- Members
of the diplomatic corps, NGOs and other members of the public can request
attendance via email to: ICCVisits@icc-cpi.int before 14
February 2022 at 12:00 (noon). Attendees must present a valid
passport or valid ID with a photo at the main entrance of the Court (at: Oude
Waalsdorperweg 10, 2597 AK The Hague).
- Journalists
wishing to cover the hearing can request accreditation via email to: PublicAffairs.Unit@icc-cpi.int before 14
February 2022 at 12:00 (noon). All journalists must present a valid
press card, and a valid passport or valid ID with a photo, at the main entrance of the Court (at: Oude
Waalsdorperweg 10, 2597 AK The Hague).
Individuals who have not received a confirmation in advance of
the hearing will not be granted access to the building. Those attending are
advised to arrive 20 minutes in advance before the hearing starts.

(MPEG-4) and audio (MPEG-3) format, and for viewing on the official ICC YouTube Channel.
